I stumbled upon a band called EdGuy about a year ago and fell in love with their music as they seem to be what a properly sounding 80's should have been like for metal and mayhem. However I did read up on a production the lead singer Tobias Sammet created called Avantasia. The band is absolutely amazing! Take the best parts of mainstream metal from the 70's til late 90's, give them a good recording studio, good producer and write good structured progressive music and you come pretty close to Avantasia's offerings.
From the album Angel of Babylon
I immediately obtained the entire discography and found many favorite tracks. They are not the band for everyone but since I love metal, good singers and people who know a thing or two about playing guitar I have a lot of respect for them.
Avantasia Biography:
- While being the member of a world acclaimed German metal/rock band Edguy, Tobias started his own side project called Avantasia in 1999. He only planned for it to be a one time studio excursion but the project came back to life in 2007. This time with a vengeance! By the time 2008 had arrived another release was already in the top 20 best selling albums from anywhere in Europe as soon as the third album The Scarecrow was released to public sale as well as garnishing the Best Rock Production 2008 award by the Association of German Sound Engineers. He then proceeded to release two more Avantasia albums in 2010 which are equally as impressive.
Avantasia's Discography:
- 2000 - Single
- 2001 - The Metal Opera Part I
- 2002 - The Metal Opera Part II
- 2007 - Lost In Space Part I
- 2007 - Lost In Space Part II
- 2008 - The Scarecrow
- 2010 - The Wicked Symphony
- 2010 - Angel Of Babylon
My favorite Avantasia tracks are as follows:
- Black wings, Blizzard on a broken mirror, Cary me over, Down in the dark, Dying for an angel, Forever is a long time, Lost in space, Scales of Justice, Sign of the cross, The edge, The final sacrifice, The looking glass, The seven angels, The wicked symphony and finally Your love is evil.
I love discovering new music, especially of the hard rock and metal varieties so if anyone has any good suggestions then please leave me a comment here and I'll definitely check it out.
Cheers fuckers!
